Windy shows weather forecasts as coloured maps. This guide explains what the colours mean, how much to believe them, and when to move the boat trip. You need no weather background at all. Every technical word is explained the first time it appears — tap any to see what it means.

This is Windy's colour scale for wave height. Look at the numbers: 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 — then it jumps to 6, then 9. The scale is not evenly spaced. Half the colours cover the first two metres, because that is where nearly all real sea conditions sit. So a small colour change at the calm end is a bigger real change than a big colour change at the red end.

Windy does not make forecasts. It draws them.

Behind the map sit a few big computer programs called . They are run by weather agencies in Europe, America and elsewhere. Windy takes their numbers and paints them onto a map you can scroll through.

Two things follow from that, and both are useful.

How does a model actually work?

It chops the air and sea into a grid of boxes, fills each box with today's real measurements from satellites, weather balloons, ships and buoys, then uses the laws of physics to work out what each box does a few seconds later. Then it repeats that, millions of times, until it reaches next week.

Nobody is looking up what happened on similar days in the past. It is a physics calculation, run fresh, usually two to four times a day. When you hear ECMWF or GFS, those are the European and American versions.

Before you read anything

Three things to check first

Every colour on the map is the answer to a question you may not have asked. Check these three things before you read anything into it. Two of them live in corners of the screen most people never touch.

The timeline. Windy opens on the nearest time step, which may not be now. Drag it. A morning that looks fine at 9am can be a thunderstorm at 5pm, and a still picture hides that completely.

This is why a screenshot of Windy on its own tells you very little. If a colleague sends you one, ask which model and which hour.

Sorted for a Sri Lankan tourism business. A pilot or a yacht crew would sort them completely differently, and a few of the "ignore" ones exist only because Windy is used worldwide — there is no snow to forecast here.

That is all the number means: how deep the water would sit if none of it drained away. What matters for your day is not the total but how fast it arrives. Drag the slider and see the difference.

The trap. Windy's rain layer shows millimetres per time step, usually a 3‑hour block — not per hour. So 15 mm on the map could be steady light rain for three hours, or the whole lot in twenty minutes with sunshine either side. In Sri Lanka it is very often the second one.

There is a separate layer called Rain accumulation that adds the rain up over days. Useful for "has the road washed out" questions. Useless for "will the 4pm walking tour get wet".

Why does it rain at the same time every afternoon?

The sun heats the land all morning. Warm wet air rises, cools, and its water turns back into droplets, which releases heat, which pushes it up faster still. The result is a tall cloud that dumps its water in a short burst.

Over Sri Lanka this runs on a clock. Lightning peaks around 4:30pm and the heaviest rain around 5:30pm, with most strikes between 4pm and 6pm. That is why an outdoor event at 5pm in April is a different proposition from the same event at 11am.

The hills decide, not the sky

This is the part no weather app will tell you, and it explains more about Sri Lankan rainfall than anything else. The central highlands rise to over 2,500 m. When wet monsoon air hits them it has to climb, and climbing air cools and dumps its water on the slope facing the wind. By the time it comes down the other side it is dry.

Which monsoon

How big is the difference? Ratnapura, at the foot of the western slope, gets 3,688 mm a year across 198 rainy days. Nuwara Eliya, up in the hills 52 km away, gets 1,838 mm across 160 days. The lowland town gets twice the rain of the mountain town, which is the opposite of what everyone expects. Height is not what matters. Which way the slope faces is.
The number that should change how you talk to guests. Between June and August, on days when Colombo recorded 10 mm of rain or more, Trincomalee recorded exactly zero on 87% of those days. Not less rain. None. Over roughly 260 km, the same day is a washout on one coast and completely dry on the other.

That is also why "it is raining in Sri Lanka" is close to a meaningless statement. Across June to August, Ratnapura has rain on about two days in three, while Jaffna has rain on fewer than one day in ten. Annual totals run from about 900 mm in the driest lowlands to over 5,000 mm on the western slopes — more than five times the rain, on an island 430 km long.

Why does this trip up the forecast?

Because the model does not really know the hills are there. At 9 km boxes the central highlands get smoothed into a broad low mound, far lower and gentler than the real thing. So the model under-does the rain piling up on the windward slope, and under-does how dry the sheltered side gets.

In practice: if you are on the windward side, expect a bit more rain than Windy says. If you are in the rain shadow, expect a bit less. Which side you are on flips with the monsoon, so it is worth knowing both.

Knots mean nothing until you have seen what they do

Wind is measured in on Windy by default. The number is meaningless on its own, so here is what each one actually does to a palm tree, a flag and the sea. Drag it.

Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology issues bulletins in kilometres per hour, not knots. A red marine advisory is issued at roughly 60–70 km/h, which is 32–38 knots, and fishing gets suspended in the named sea areas when it happens. If Windy is showing you that on your stretch of coast, the official answer is already no.

Gusts are what break things

The wind number is an average, usually over ten minutes. A is a short burst well above it. Marquees collapse, umbrellas invert and boats get into trouble on the gust, never on the average. Windy gives gusts as a separate layer, and the gap between the two is the thing to look at.

Out at sea in steady conditions, gusts run about 1.2–1.3× the average. Near the coast and over land, more like 1.4–1.7×. When a thunderstorm is about, the gust can be several times the average, because it is cold air crashing down out of the cloud and spreading sideways. That is the one that catches people out.

One: the height shown is not the wave you get

Wave layers show . It is not the average wave and it is not the biggest one. It is the average of the biggest third of the waves.

Over a few hours the largest single wave is about twice that number. So when Windy paints 2 m, expect an occasional 3.5 to 4 m wave. That occasional one is what swamps a boat or knocks a guest off a rock, and doubling the printed number is the whole trick.

Two: height is how it looks, period is how it feels

is the seconds between one wave and the next. It is not on the map colour — you have to click the sea to see it — and it matters more than height. Two seas can both say 1.5 m and be completely different days.

Watch the pink bar. That is a 10 m boat, drawn at the same scale as the water. Keep the height where it is and drag the period. The waves barely change height, but the boat goes from climbing over every one to being lifted gently by something far bigger than itself. That is why 1.5 m at 14 seconds is a pleasant trip and 1.5 m at 4 seconds is a bucket day.

Rough guide. Under 8 seconds is local chop, made by the wind you can see on the map. Over 10 seconds is that has travelled from a storm far away. Measurements off Matara found the south coast is swell-dominated about two-thirds of the year, arriving from the south almost 70% of the time.
This is the one that catches people. Swell arrives on windless, glassy, beautiful mornings. Nothing in the local wind forecast warns you. A calm-looking day can still put a dangerous shore break on the beach and a nasty lump at the harbour mouth.

Direction

Wind is named for where it comes from, not where it goes

A "southwest wind" blows out of the southwest and travels towards the northeast. Get this backwards and you send guests to exactly the wrong coast. On the map the little moving dots travel the way the air is going, so they appear to head the opposite way from the name. Both are correct.

Why this matters here more than anywhere. Sri Lanka's wind reverses by about 180 degrees between the two monsoons. From May to September it blows from the southwest, so the west and south coasts take the weather and the east is calm. From December to February it blows from the northeast and the whole thing flips. Read the direction backwards and you will pick the wrong half of the island.

The coloured map is for finding where the weather is. Once you have your spot, click it. The panel that slides up holds far more than the map ever shows, including the two numbers that decide most of your calls: wave period, and the gap between wind and gusts.

What is each row telling me?

The main question

Working out if it will rain at your place, and how much

Start with the uncomfortable bit. Rain is the worst thing a weather model does. Since 1985 forecasts of pressure and upper-air temperature have roughly halved their errors and wind has improved by about a third, but rainfall has barely moved. In the American forecast centre's best year on record, a one-day forecast of where at least 25 mm of rain would fall scored 0.48, on a scale where 1.0 is perfect.

That is not a reason to ignore it. It is a reason to read it the way a forecaster does: trust the pattern, distrust the pixel.

The method, in order

  1. Which season, and which side of the hills are you on? Before you open anything, you already know a lot. In the southwest monsoon the western slopes and southwest coast get the rain and the east is dry. In December to February it is the other way round. Get this right and you have done half the work.
  2. Open Rain accumulation for the week's shape. Pick a window — 12 hours, 24 hours, 2, 4 or 8 days — and slide it along. You are looking for whether this is a wet spell or a dry one, not for detail.
  3. Switch to Rain, thunder and scrub the timeline through one day. Each frame is millimetres over a 3-hour block. Watch when the colour arrives and when it leaves.
  4. Click your exact spot and read the meteogram. This is where the numbers are. The rain bars give you millimetres for your point instead of a colour you have to guess at. It shows 3-hour blocks by default — switching to hourly is a paid feature — so a single bar can still hide a short violent burst.
  5. Switch models. Rain is where models disagree most, so this matters more here than anywhere else. If ECMWF says 4 mm and GFS says 40 mm, you do not have a forecast, you have a coin toss.
  6. Inside two hours, stop forecasting and start looking. Open Weather radar. It shows rain that is actually falling right now, measured by radar rather than predicted. Windy's radar does cover Sri Lanka.
The colours lie between layers. The two rain layers look similar and use completely different scales. On Rain, thunder the bar runs 1.5 to 30 mm, so it turns green around 8 mm and red around 20. On Rain accumulation the same bar runs 3 to 300 mm. The identical shade of red means roughly 20 mm on one and ten times that on the other. Always read the legend, never the colour.
Two corrections that will make you better than the app.

1. It rains later than the model says. Models break the morning's cap on rising air too easily, so they fire the afternoon storm about three to four hours early — often near midday. Sri Lanka's real storm peak is 4pm to 6pm. If Windy shows rain at noon, look for it in the middle of the afternoon.

2. It rains less often, but harder, than the model says. Models sprinkle too much light drizzle and miss the intensity of real downpours. Measured against stations across Southeast Asia, forecasts ran about 31% too wet by day three. So knock roughly a third off a small number several days out, and take a big number seriously.

Windy gives you millimetres. Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology issues its warnings in millimetres too, so you can translate a forecast straight into the language of an official warning. Drag this to see where a number lands.

The landslide numbers come from the National Building Research Organisation, which runs the warning system on rainfall thresholds of 75, 100 and 150 mm in a day. They apply to the ten landslide-prone districts: Kalutara, Galle, Hambantota, Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Kandy, Kegalle, Ratnapura, Matara and Badulla. If your property or your guests' route is in one of those, this is the number that matters more than any other on this page.

Why can the model be so wrong about my valley?

Two reasons, and both are worse than most people assume.

The number is an average over the whole box. ECMWF's own guide gives an example where the box average was 17 mm while the real amounts inside that same box ranged over roughly ten times that spread. The single figure you are reading is a smoothed average of a very uneven reality.

A model does not truly resolve its own grid size. By ECMWF's own measurement a feature needs roughly eight boxes across before the model represents it properly. So a 9 km model does not see 9 km detail — it fully resolves nothing smaller than about 70 km. A single thunderstorm is 2 to 5 km across. It is not being forecast at all; it is being estimated statistically.

Windy draws one clean number for every hour of the next two weeks. Day twelve looks exactly as confident as tonight, which is misleading. The fix is free: switch models and see how far apart they are. Close together means the weather is settled. Spread out means nobody knows yet, and staring at one model harder will not help.

A model does not see the world as a photograph. It sees it as a , and it knows only one wind, one temperature and one rainfall for each whole box. Anything smaller than a box is invisible to it. Drag this and watch the island turn into steps.

Weligama Bay is about 2 km wide. Even the finest model available here has boxes more than four times wider than the entire bay — and Sri Lanka has no local high-resolution model on Windy, no 1–2 km option like Europe gets. Nine kilometres is the best you will ever have. The map still draws a smooth, confident colour over your beach, because it fills in the gaps between boxes to look nice. That smoothness is decoration, not knowledge.

So what else is it missing?

The afternoon sea breeze. Land heats faster than sea, so air flows in off the water from late morning, building to maybe 15–25 knots by mid-afternoon and dying at sunset. At night it reverses and blows gently offshore. This sits on top of whatever the monsoon is doing and the coarse models handle it poorly.

Individual thunderstorms. A storm cell is 2–5 km across. The model can tell you the day is stormy; it cannot tell you the storm hits your beach at 4:40pm.

Shelter. Headlands, reefs and bays change everything at scales the grid cannot represent. Unawatuna is calm in conditions that close Hikkaduwa, because of a reef the model does not know exists.

Local measurements. Sri Lanka's Met Department runs 23 stations reporting every three hours and just one weather balloon site, at Colombo. It says itself that this is not enough to pick up smaller weather systems. The models feeding Windy have thin local data to work from here.

Somewhere in Sri Lanka is having good weather right now

That is the useful way to think about the monsoon. The wind reverses by about 180 degrees twice a year, so the two halves of the island take turns. When the southwest is wet, the east is in its dry season. When the east is wet, the southwest is dry.

There is no month when the whole island is washed out. A forecast that looks terrible where you are standing can be a perfect day 100 km away, and knowing which way to point guests is worth more than any other single thing on this page.

Pink shading marks the exposed side. These are typical patterns from Sri Lanka's Department of Meteorology and from operators, not guarantees — individual years vary a lot. Use them to plan, then check the live forecast for the actual date.

MAY–SEPTEMBER

Send guests east

Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikudah, Batticaloa and Arugam Bay are in their dry season and at their best of the year. The southwest takes the wind and rain, so Galle, Mirissa and Hikkaduwa go quiet on the water.

OCTOBER–NOVEMBER

The one awkward window

The only period where switching coasts does not rescue you. Rain can turn up anywhere, squalls are at their most frequent, and this is the cyclone season for the north and east. Keep schedules loose, over-communicate, and be generous with refund terms.

DECEMBER–FEBRUARY

Send guests southwest

Now it flips. Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Weligama, Mirissa and Tangalle are dry and calm, with the year's clearest water for diving. The east coast takes its turn and most Trincomalee dive schools close.

MARCH–APRIL

Good almost everywhere

Usually the calmest seas of the year around most of the island, and the best all-island window for anything on the water. The catch is lightning: nearly a third of the year's strikes fall in these two months, mostly between 4pm and 6pm. Mornings are fine. Late-afternoon outdoor events need cover.

Careful with the names. Travel websites regularly swap the two inter-monsoons. The Met Department's own definition is: first inter-monsoon is March–April, second is October–November. And "Yala" and "Maha" are farming seasons, not monsoon names — using them for weather causes real confusion about dates.

Making the call

Turning a forecast into a decision

Sri Lanka publishes no official wind or wave limit for tourist boats. The tourism authority requires you to assess the weather in your own procedures but sets no number. So the only official trigger is the Met Department's own advisory — when it tells the fishing fleet not to go out in your sea area, that is your answer too.

The thing that actually kills guests is not the forecast. Most foreign visitors who drown in Sri Lanka are caught by on days that look completely calm, at beaches with no lifeguard. A flat sea on Windy is not a safe beach. Brief guests on rips regardless of what the forecast says.

  1. Check which model and which hour you are looking at.
  2. Drag the timeline through the whole day. You are looking for when things change, not for one moment.
  3. Switch models. If they agree, trust it. If they spread apart, that is your real answer — it is not settled.
  4. Click your exact spot and read the detail panel. Wave period and the gust gap are the two numbers the map did not show you.
  5. Do the two conversions: double the wave height for the biggest wave, and divide gust by average for the squall signal.
  6. Ask what the model cannot see here — the afternoon sea breeze, one storm cell, the shelter of your own bay — and fill those gaps with the radar layer and your own eyes.
